Assam Registered Vehicle Set Ablaze By Shillong Mob On Tuesday

GUWAHATI : As a result of the situation emerging from the Assam- Meghalaya border incident in the West Jaintia Hills, where six people lost their lives, an SUV was set aflame on Tuesday in Meghalaya's capital city, Shillong. The episode took place at night, near Mahavir Park in Jhalupara area by a mob of around 20-30 people, according to reports..

After getting the information, a fire brigade rushed to the spot and put out the blaze. No casualties were reported, however the SUV was completely destroyed in the fire. According to the statements of police officials, the incident is one of the consequences of the firing episode at Mukroh village in West Jaintia Hills.

On 21st of November, Tuesday, a forest guard from Assam and five other people from Meghalaya died in a firing incident at Mukroh village, which led to tension in the entire region of the state. In order to prevent the state against more violence and hostility, the Meghalaya government has restricted mobile internet services in seven districts for 48 hours.

The aim is to block the misuse of social media platforms like WhatsApp and Facebook that would disturb the tranquility of the state. The unfortunate event occurred around 7 AM in the morning, when a team from Assam forest department tried to obstruct a truck that was allegedly transferring smuggled timber. The truck tried to escape from the situation and sped away.

The Assam forest department chased the truck till the Meghalaya territory where the team punctured one tyre of the truck. The locals assumed the forest department team as trespassers and ringed the Assam police and the guards.

Meghalaya Chief Minister, Conrad Sangma, regretted the occurrence. However he stated that the Assam police initiated the firing. An FIR has been registered by the Meghalaya government for a thorough investigation regarding the incident.
